Governance Without Micromanagement: Navigating the Board–Executive Partnership
One of the greatest challenges facing nonprofit organizations is knowing where governance ends and management begins. Should the board approve a new hire? Who owns strategic planning? When should board members become involved in operational issues?
Through engaging discussion, interactive exercises, and real-world governance scenarios, participants will explore the distinct yet complementary roles of boards and executive leaders. Together, they will examine common situations that blur the line between oversight and management and apply practical decision-making frameworks to determine the appropriate level of board involvement.
Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of governance responsibilities, strategies to avoid micromanagement while maintaining effective oversight, and practical tools for strengthening accountability, communication, and the board–executive partnership. Whether you are a board member or an executive leader, this session will help you build a governance culture that empowers leadership, improves decision-making, and allows everyone to focus on the work they do best.
